Medill Reports: Between the Leaves (From Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism)

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Dani Friedland and Tara Kerpelman of Northwestern explore the health benefits of tea and possible medical interactions. While we're not really qualified (thankfully) to give medical advice, they did seek us out to get a little background information on tea and our take on its health benefits.

We were particularly struck by their experiment in extracting tea from green and black teas (see the video above the story).

This year's festival coincided with Earth Day, and our recycled pinewood gift boxes seemed wonderfully apropos. New Package Labels With a Green Twist

We are thrilled with our new eco-friendly labels produced by a wonderful company in Colorado called Lightning Labels. These labels are coated with a material called EarthFirst PLA, made from corn instead of imported petroleum found on most label films.

From Lightning Labels:

Most film material (durable material that is both waterproof and oilproof), such as the popular white BOPP material, are made from petroleum. Now, there is an alternative - it is a material called EarthFirst PLA and it is made from corn, a renewable resource. “Until recently there have been virtually no environmentally friendly options for people who purchase labels,” said Steve Smith, president of Lightning Labels. “We are committed to earth-friendly business practices, and so we are delighted to be one of the first digital label printers in the country to stock the EarthFirst PLA corn-based material.”

Valentines day Benefit - Giving from the Heart

The American Association of Women in Community Colleges held their annual Valentines Day Tea Party at Parkland College, in Champaign, IL on February 14, 2008.

The event was titled "Giving from the Heart" and was a benefit for the Center for Women in Transition (a local non-profit to help women who are going through difficulty). The Simple Leaf tea was extremely proud to support the wonderful work of the center by serving and selling several varieties of our loose leaf tea at the benefit. 100% of the proceeds went to the Center for Women in Transition.

Holiday Cheer From a Shipping Pallet

We are very excited to launch our brand new pinewood gift boxes. What’s so special about that, you ask? Well, this is not your run-of-the-mill gift box — each one was carefully hand-crafted from discarded shipping pallets.

Our story begins in the port of Calcutta. Heavy cargo, encased in wooden pallets, arrives by the boat-load every single day. While a small number of pallets are re-used, most of them are not. Rather than watching the boxes get unceremoniously dumped, an enterprising young box-maker salvages them, strips them down, and creates beautiful hand made boxes. In the end, an old wooden pallet gets a new lease on life and a Calcutta box-maker helps reduce waste in his own little corner of the world.

The Metamorphosis Of The Shipping Pallet

Wooden shipping pallets arrive in Calcutta.

Loads and loads of them. And they're stacked high!

Here comes our box-maker, ready to begin dismantling them...

...before using a saw to cut them into smaller pieces.

Lots of cutting and sawing to do...

...before the wood gets planed, to ensure an even surface.

The planed pieces of wood are stacked again....

...into many, many stacks.

Now, we're ready for more cutting.

And then we stack again!

The pieces are now beginning to take shape...

...as a box-maker carefully assembles each box.

Once the boxes are assembled, they are sanded down.

...to ensure a smooth finish.

A hard days work ends, and the almost-finished boxes are covered up for the night.

The next day, a few more finishing touches are applied.

And they're almost ready for delivery.

Finally, the boxes are packed and await shipment to us. Next stop - Chicago, IL!

James Norwood Pratt Weighs In

Widely recognized for his contributions to tea (not just in the US, but around the world) James Norwood Pratt is a distinguished historian, author and most importantly, a student, of tea. We were obviously delighted when he wrote us and shared his impressions of some of our teas.
